GATES 01–06 · ENTRY CRITERIA
ICT/SMC Entry Checklist

These six gates verify your setup meets full institutional criteria. Each has an educational deep-dive — tap the ▼ to learn the concept in detail.

GATE 01 — LEVEL: Price at OB, FVG, or OTE
Order Block / Fair Value Gap / Optimal Trade Entry confirmed
YES
NO
⬡ LEARN THIS CONCEPT
An Order Block (OB) is the last opposing candle before an impulsive move away from a price zone — where institutional orders were placed. A Fair Value Gap (FVG) is a 3-candle imbalance where the market moved so fast it left inefficiency that price will return to fill. The Optimal Trade Entry (OTE) is the 0.618–0.79 Fibonacci retracement into a premium/discount zone. You only enter when price reaches one of these three institutional locations — never in the middle of a range.
Real Example
"Price on NQ 15M tapped back into the 4H bullish OB at 19,180–19,220. I marked this zone pre-session. Price is now at the OB — Gate 01 passes."
GATE 02 — LIQUIDITY: BSL or SSL Swept
Buy-Side or Sell-Side Liquidity sweep confirmed before entry
YES
NO
⬡ LEARN THIS CONCEPT
Buy-Side Liquidity (BSL) pools above swing highs where retail stop-losses and breakout orders cluster. Sell-Side Liquidity (SSL) pools below swing lows. Smart Money sweeps these pools to collect orders before the real move. Without a liquidity sweep, you are entering before the institutional move has been initiated — you're fighting the flow instead of following it.
Real Example
"Before my long entry, price swept the SSL below the previous 1H low by 4 ticks then violently reversed — confirming institutional accumulation. Gate 02 passes."
GATE 03 — THE DOJI: Wick ≥ 2× Body Size
Institutional rejection candle with significant wick confirmed
YES
NO
⬡ LEARN THIS CONCEPT
The institutional rejection candle — often called a Doji, Hammer, or Pin Bar in ICT methodology — shows strong rejection at the zone. The wick represents price probing the level and being violently rejected by institutional order flow. The wick must be at least 2× the size of the candle body to confirm meaningful institutional presence. A small wick shows weak conviction; a long wick shows strong rejection.
Real Example
"At the OB, a 15M candle printed with a 12-tick wick below and only a 4-tick body — wick is 3× the body. Institutional rejection confirmed. Gate 03 passes."
GATE 04 — THE CLOSE: Candle Fully Formed
Never trade a developing candle — wait for the confirmed close
YES
NO
⬡ LEARN THIS CONCEPT
A developing candle has not yet confirmed its structure. The wick you see right now may close as the body — destroying the setup. Trading a developing wick is one of the most common rule violations in ICT methodology and a significant source of unnecessary losses. Wait for the candle to close before making any decision. The few seconds of impatience cost more than the setup is worth.
Real Example
"I watched the 15M candle close with a confirmed wick at the OB — the candle is fully formed, the structure is locked. Gate 04 passes."
GATE 05 — THE ENTRY: Break of Wick (Limit Only)
Entry on break of the rejection wick — never a market order at zone
YES
NO
⬡ LEARN THIS CONCEPT
After the rejection candle closes, you place a limit order at the break of the wick's high (for longs) or low (for shorts). This confirms that price has accepted the rejection and is moving in your intended direction. Using a market order at the zone means entering before confirmation — you're paying a premium for uncertainty. The break-of-wick entry gives you confirmation and a tighter stop.
Real Example
"The rejection candle wick high is at 19,192. I place a limit buy at 19,193 — one tick above the wick. If triggered, I have confirmation of acceptance. Gate 05 passes."
GATE 06 — STRUCTURE: BOS or CHoCH on Higher Timeframe
Break of Structure or Change of Character confirms directional bias
YES
NO
⬡ LEARN THIS CONCEPT
A Break of Structure (BOS) confirms the continuation of trend — price breaks the previous swing high (bullish) or swing low (bearish). A Change of Character (CHoCH) signals a potential trend reversal. Your entry direction must align with the higher timeframe structure. Trading against the HTF BOS/CHoCH is trading counter to institutional flow — the setup may work once, but the expectancy is negative over time.
Real Example
"4H chart shows a BOS above the last swing high — bullish structure confirmed. My 15M long setup aligns with the HTF direction. Gate 06 passes."

ICT/SMC Education

The institutional concepts behind every gate.

Each guardrail exists because of how institutional money actually moves markets. Understanding the why makes the rules automatic — not a cage, but a framework for seeing what retail traders can't.

Order Blocks
Where Institutions Left Their Orders
Order Blocks are price zones where large institutional participants placed their buy or sell orders. These zones act as magnets — price returns to them because unfilled institutional orders remain there. The OB is defined by the last opposing candle before an impulsive displacement move.
Key Rule
"Only trade at OBs that caused a significant displacement (3+ candles of consecutive movement). Weak displacement = weak institutional presence."
Fair Value Gaps
Imbalances the Market Must Fill
A Fair Value Gap occurs when price moves so violently that a 3-candle gap is created — the wicks of candles 1 and 3 do not overlap. This represents market inefficiency. Smart Money uses FVGs as entry points because price statistically returns to fill these imbalances before continuing in the original direction.
Key Rule
"An FVG within a larger OB is called a 'nested FVG' — the highest probability entry in the ICT model. Always check for OB+FVG confluence."
Liquidity Sweeps
Why Smart Money Hunts Stop-Losses
Institutional traders need liquidity — they cannot fill massive orders at a single price without moving the market against themselves. They deliberately drive price above swing highs (BSL) or below swing lows (SSL) to trigger retail stop-losses and breakout orders, which become the liquidity they need to fill their actual positions.
Key Rule
"Never enter before the sweep. The sweep IS the signal. If you enter before liquidity is taken, you are the liquidity being taken."
Market Structure
BOS and CHoCH — Reading Intent
Market structure is the sequence of highs and lows that defines whether an asset is in an uptrend (higher highs, higher lows) or downtrend. A Break of Structure (BOS) confirms trend continuation — a new high in a bull trend. A Change of Character (CHoCH) signals potential reversal — a new low during what was a bull trend.
Key Rule
"Always identify BOS/CHoCH on the 4H or 1H before trading the 15M. You need to know which direction the institutional hand is pointing."

"Discipline in trading is not about following rules because someone told you to. It's about understanding why institutional price delivery works the way it does — and then never deviating from what you know to be true about the market structure."

Rules Without Understanding Break
Traders who follow rules without knowing why abandon them under pressure. The Guardrails system teaches the institutional reasoning behind every gate so the rules become instinct, not effort.
02
📊
Confluence is Probability
Each additional gate that passes adds confluence — the overlap of multiple institutional signals. A setup with 9/9 gates confirmed is not 9× a 1-gate setup. It's exponentially higher probability due to the convergence of independent signals.
